Ofsted school description

William Morris caters for learners with severe learning difficulties (SLD), profound and multiple learning difficulties (PMLD), social, emotional and learning difficulties (SELD) and, moderate learning difficulties (MLD). A number also have complex learning needs. All learners have a statement of special educational need. Though some join the school at differing times, most arrive in Year 7 from another special school in the borough. Learners also join the school in Year 12, most coming from the borough and, a third from neighbouring boroughs. Currently, boys outnumber girls by almost two to one. Approximately a third is of White British heritage, just over a third is of Asian heritage and a fifth is of Black origin. The social and economic backgrounds of learners are diverse and almost a half of learners are entitled to free school meals. The local authority looks after five learners. Three are refugees and asylum seekers and four are at the early stages of English language acquisition.

The school returned to local authority control in March of this year, having been previously outsourced to a private provider. It has extended school status and, as at the time of the last inspection, is a 'wave 1' building schools for the future (BSF) project school.
